In May of 2004, long-time friends Christina Kornilakis, a social worker of 10 years working with youth in the justice system and Sarah Gregory, an artist and free-lance designer, opened the doors to their flagship store. In a formerly abandoned laundromat on a quiet block in quaint NoLita, Sweet Tater (AKA ‘the tatershop’) was born. Since that time, Elle, Jane, Nylon and The Face, to name a few, have all recognized Sweet Tater. Sweet Tater reincarnates the 1950's through the early 80's, housing a full line of vintage apparel and accessories, but has become known for its shoes and boots, boots, boots (did we mention the boots?). Priding themselves on their friendly rapport with their customers, neither Sarah nor Christina can ever seem to bring herself to call Page 6 when their celebrity shoppers visit; Sofia Coppola, Karolina Kurkova, Kirsten Dunst and Liv Tyler, amongst others, have them to thank for that. Their very first customer was not the last to say, "I feel like you went shopping just for me." Often in awe of their finds, customers will continually stump the girls with, "WHERE do you find all of your stuff?!" Although a simple coy grin is their standard reply, you may catch them one day tearing up (and down) the East Coast in their ‘92 Volvo wagon (the 'tatermobile') or flying off to Italy and Greece where, as if following an innate treasure map, their aunts guide them through windy village streets which inevitably lead to the gems soon to adorn the racks of their carefully curated Mulberry Street boutique. In the fall of 2005, in an effort to recreate these favorite vintage finds, Christina and Sarah began their house label Sweet Tater and found an immediate following for their close-fitting menswear inspired vests and high-waisted trousers. That spring ('06) brought 'the dress,' a Grecian inspired cotton shirtdress that literally stopped girls in their frenetic NY pace and drew them into the store in droves. Each season since, the girls have recreated 'the dress' with a variation in fabric, color or length while continuing to add new styles to their repertoire. Fall of 2006 marked their first exclusive design collection out of house for the Intermix stores. Holed up in their homey NoLita boutique, the girls of Sweet Tater can often be found with a desk full of sketches, fabric swatches and many a cup of black tea. They have proven themselves as both the businesswomen and the designers, all the while keeping true to their roots. The Mediterranean flowing through their veins, infusing their sketches, the waves of their hair, their hugely superstitious ways and, of course, their belief in the evil eye...their designs come alive in crisp cottons, sexy velvets and soft wools. They have been known to dabble in luxurious silks. As if with only you in mind, they create your most coveted pieces: those which don't just hang in, but grace your closet, the 'must haves' for each season that will, one day, become your daughter's vintage. You, for saving it, will be her hero. |
